Food porn: Vieux-Port Steakhouse has the food porn pretty much on lock. With customers paying top dollar for a meal in the Old Port, this establishment knows they’ve got a reputation to uphold.

Drink specials: We ordered the $38 Sterling cabernet-sauvignon from the Happening Gourmand menu. Don’t expect much of a price break on drinks here on any given night, though.

Atmosphere: This place is written about in just about every guidebook featuring the funky island of MTL. With three floors, two buildings, and 1500 seats– including two terraces in the summer– it’s a great spot to soak in the good vibes.

Service: Fantastic. The staff was welcoming, friendly and kept things interesting with a great sense of humour. Not to mention, they let us cheat twice on the fixed menu.

Price: This isn’t your standard $2 chow mein… expect to pay, but you’ll get your money’s worth on a good night.

Every January, seven or eight well-established restaurants in Old Montreal– all affiliated with the awesome Experience Old Montreal conglomerate– feature $23 or $27 set-menus comprised of three mouthwatering courses. Walking into Vieux-Port Steakhouse, I quickly forgot about the subzero temperatures outside and eyed the choices of the 6th annual Happening Gourmand menu.

For the appetizer, everyone ordered the mesclun salad with a honey-dijon vinaigrette. Nothing particularly exciting there, so I’ll move on to the main course… Three out of four ordered the bacon-wrapped filet mignon, served with roasted garlic mashed potatoes and veal reduction. BOOM. The steak is clearly the specialty here, and it didn’t disappoint in the slightest. Well done, Monsieur Chef. (Only complaint is that the bacon wasn’t crispy enough… not crispy at all, in fact.) We also got the striped bass with lemon sauce, wild rice and vegetables, which was nice and light.

Without a doubt, dessert was the absolute best. When I saw someone else order it, I politely (read: childish puppy face) asked if I could have the strawberry cheesecake, to which the waiter gladly obliged. Honestly, it was incredible. The cheesecake was rich, delicious, and so fresh… it’s a MUST for any dessert lover. The waiter broke the rules again when he brought a gigantic plate of fruit that wasn’t on the menu either. The chocolate cake was also really good– soft, fluffy, but not too airy, either. The cake bottom fused well with the mousse and nicely complemented the meaty main course. Overall, pretty good food, and a really nice evening. Go ahead and check it out next time you’re feeling a little touristy.
