Instagrammers, whether you like it or not, are some of the most influential photographers of our age. We wanted to get to know the personalities behind the cameras, so we reached out to a few phone photographers who have been capturing their own unique beauty. These individuals have been hard at work shooting some of Montreal’s best sights, from dawn until dusk, across our city’s diverse landscapes.
Jeff Frenette @dezjeff is a freelance travel and food photographer with a background in architecture and graphic design, in love with food, cities and nature. He loves traveling and wandering in unknown places. But most of all, Jeff likes to be able to meet people through the Instagram community all around the world. Oh, and coffee! Everything is better with coffee!
Q: What are some of your favourite spots in Montreal?
A: So many cool spots in Montreal! I’m going crazy each time I’m in the city (I am originally from Quebec City). But lately I fell in love with the brunch at Maison Publique, the space and coffee at Dispatch Coffee and also Maison Montures (I love a good vintage frame on my face!).
Q: When did you first start taking pictures and how has this affected your life?
A: I first started taking pictures when I received a Polaroid Joycam as a birthday gift at age 10 or so. I would ask my parents all the time to go and buy Polaroid film. I think it’s where it all started. I think this has affected my life in the most positive way. I think it makes you see things in a different way and see things other people don’t usually see.
Q: What is your process for taking the perfect Instagram photo?
A: I don’t have any particular process for taking the perfect Instagram photo. I just like to snap a lot and then go through my photos afterwards!
Q: What is a dream destination you would love to see and photograph?
A: Oh, so many destinations I would love to see and photograph. But Africa intrigues me a lot and India too. I would love to go to Antarctica one day! In the next few months I will be traveling to Peru, Ireland, France and Morocco and I’m just back from an amazing trip to Israel.
Q: Who are some of your favourite instagrammers?
A: Again, so many instagrammers! I could go on and on for hours. But lately: @5ftinf, @elysebouvier, @rvstapleton, @petewilliams, and @__remmidemmi. Oh and go check out my followings, everyone in there is worth a follow!
Q: You recently took a trip with Air Canada, can you tell us a little bit about that?
A: Of course! Air Canada hired me to showcase their new Toronto-Tel Aviv route and the destination itself. It’s definitely not the first destination people have in mind when planning their next trip, so I hope I’ve been able to give everyone the desire to experience Israel.
