Instagrammers, whether you like it or not, are some of the most impactful photographers of our age. We wanted to get to know the personalities behind the cameras, so we reached out to a few phone photographers who have been capturing their own unique beauty. These individuals have been hard at work shooting some of Montreal’s best sights, from dawn until dusk, across our city’s diverse landscapes.
Olivier Drouin @Drowster is a young Montreal-based adventurer in constant pursuit of euphoria. He finds true happiness in exploring new and unknown places whilst trying to achieve one of his main objectives: visiting 40 countries by the age of 40. He is, however, seriously considering raising the bar to 60 countries by his fourth decade!
Q: What is your favourite time of day?
A: Even though I’m really not a morning person, I truly love the morning light. There’s something so pure, divine and magnificent about it. The few minutes I can enjoy it while biking at school before my first class are filled with ecstasy!
Q: What is your favourite season of the year?
A: I’ve learned to enjoy each season for its benefits. I love winter for the white, summer for the contrasts and constant light, fall for its orange-ish colors and spring for its blooming nature and warm vibes after a long and cold winter!
Q: When did you start taking photos and how has it affected your life?
A: I started concentrating on photography after my final project in CEGEP. I was surprised by the amount of positive feedback received and it therefore encouraged me to continue. Instagram gave me confidence overtime by being able to practice everyday with my smartphone and getting feedback directly from my followers!
Q: What process do you go through to capture a perfect Instagram photo?
A: Explore and experiment. Trying to always live something new either by the nature of the experience or the location. I’m extremely curious and truly love seeing new things. For example, I take a lot of walks with friends, going from one café to another and exploring new streets.
Q: What are your favourite coffee shops?
A: One of my favorite things of Montreal is its independant café scene. I have a infinite list of cafés to try out and test. I have a few favorites: Parvis, Myriade (all three of them), Buck15, L’Artiste Affamé, Névé!
Q: Who are your favourite instagrammers?
A: I love encouraging local talent so I would say @petewilliams, @audreyrivet and @jeannemap!
