If you find yourself on the Plateau on a Saturday evening around 5 pm doing some last-minute weekend shopping, don’t rush! You still have 4 extra hours of shopping time thanks to a newly adopted regulation that allows Plateau retailers to stay open until 9 pm on weekends.
Over the years, many St-Laurent Blvd. shops have come and gone due to the high cost of maintaining a storefront on “The Main’s” coveted stretch of real estate. Merchants believe that this new regulation allows shops to be able to establish themselves and even significantly increase their sales numbers.
Keep in mind that this is only a 2 year pilot project, which includes merchants on Mont-Royal, Saint-Denis, Saint-Laurent and Duluth to extend their weekend opening hours. The results, however, look quite positive since the regulation was adopted in December of 2014 with shop-owners saying that 15 to 25 percent of their weekend sales occur between 5 pm and 6:30 pm.
With this new regulation, people from all around the island of Montreal will be able to experience the Plateau to its fullest and shop owners will be able to improve their sales numbers. Everybody wins.
